R clips, also known as clevis pin retaining clips or clevis pin clips, are essential components in precision engineering, designed to fasten and hold other components in place securely.
These clips are distinguished by their unique shape, featuring a loop-like bend and a straight section that allows them to snap into place, providing a secure tensional locking mechanism without the need for tools, an advantage over similar split pins, which can't be installed by hand.
R clips are typically used in conjunction with clevis pins, providing a reliable method to prevent accidental removal of the pin from its assembly.
R clip pins work by fitting into a hole through the centre shaft of a clevis pin or similar fastener. The straight part of the clip slides through the hole in the pin, while the curved part snaps over the pin body, ensuring it stays securely in place. This simple yet effective design makes clevis pins and r clips ideal for quick assembly and disassembly in various applications.
In real-life scenarios, clevis pin clips are used across multiple industries, including automotive, aerospace and agricultural machinery. For instance, in the automotive industry, clevis pin clips are employed to secure hitch pins, while in aerospace, they ensure critical components remain intact under high-stress conditions.
At Accu, we offer r clips made from high-quality A2 stainless steel. This material choice provides several advantages:
Our range of R Clips sizes accommodates different needs from huge industrial needs to small 3D printed projects.
The smallest pin diameter available is 1mm, and the largest is 6mm. In terms of length, we offer r clip pins ranging from 20mm to 124mm. These dimensions ensure that we have a clip suitable for any application, from delicate, precise assemblies to more robust and demanding uses.
When selecting the right r clip, it’s crucial to consider the diameter of the compatible clevis pin as well as the through hole of said pin. Our r clips are designed to fit clevis pins with diameters ranging from 3-5mm for smaller applications to 28-40mm for larger, more heavy-duty requirements along with hole diameters from 1.3mm and 7mm.
A: To measure an r clip, begin by measuring the thickness of the wire used to make the clip with a caliper, this will let you know if it will fit the through hole of the pin as well as its flexibility and strength. Next measure the height of the pin gap, which is from the straight leg of the clip to the bump where the pin will align. Doubling this will give you a rough idea of the pin diameter. Lastly, measure the overall length of the clip from the loop end to the straight end for its total length.
A: A cotter pin or split pin is a simple metal pin with a loop at one end and two straight legs. It is inserted through a hole in a bolt or pin, and the ends are bent to hold it in place. In contrast, an r clip has a more complex shape with a straight segment and a loop forming an "R" shape. It clips into a groove on a pin, providing a quick and secure fastening without the need for bending. R Clips are ideal for applications requiring frequent assembly and disassembly.
A: To put on an r clip, start by positioning it so that the straight section is aligned with the hole in the clevis pin. Push the straight end of the clip through the hole in the pin, then press the looped end over the pin until it snaps securely into place.
A: To remove an r clip, locate the clip that needs to be removed and use pliers or your fingers to grasp the looped end. Gently pull the looped end to slide the straight section out of the hole in the pin. Once the straight end is free, pull the entire clip away from the pin.
High precision, bespoke manufacture of R Clips to customer specification. State of the art facilities specialising in both small batch prototyping and large scale manufacture.
